Loss of water and minerals by sweat, together with gradual depletion of energy sources constitutes the main reasons underlying decreasing performance. They may be of significant importance depending on the type of the given sport and on load intensity, in particular in endurance sports. Water deficit manifests itself in gradual thickening of blood and increasing its viscosity, which represents enormous strain on heart and kidneys and, together with overheating, results in a dramatic reduction of performance and serious health problems. The harmful effects of dehydration can be countered by a suitable ionic drink.

Penco ED long is a refreshing ionic drink developed for body rehydration after a long-term load in excess of 1.5 h. In addition to the optimum proportion of electrolytes (Na, K, Mg, Ca, P, and others) its advantages include increased content of glucose polymers (maltodextrin), now also the high content of a special saccharide isomaltulose.

The benefits of glucose polymers consist in that they do not excessively raise the osmolality of the drink and thus enable efficient rehydration during increased energy consumption due to intensive endurance performance. Another positive characteristic of the new ionic drink is the higher content of antioxidative vitamins C + E and key elements of the antioxidative system (selenium + zinc + manganese) that protect the overloaded organism against the risk of "oxidative stress" brought about by free oxygen radicals.

Energy is provided by simple sugars (glucose and saccharose), oligosaccharides (maltodextrins) and now also by a unique disaccharide isomaltulose (PALATINOSE™), present to release energy gradually. The new ED contains 20 % PALATINOSE.

Isomaltulose was discovered in 1957. It is a natural component of honey and sugar cane. Contrary to saccharose, where the glycosidic bond between glucose and fructose is in position 1,2, in isomaltulose the bond connects positions 1,6. Thanks to this difference isomaltulose is more stable than saccharose and is metabolised more slowly without any significant increase of the glucose level in blood. Isomaltulose is the first slowly digestible sugar that provides to the muscles and brain an identical amount of energy (4 kcal/g) as saccharose or glucose but over an extended time period. While the body is able to utilise normal sugar or glucose rapidly and sugar concentration in the blood decreases to the basal level within some 60 minutes, isomaltulose is metabolised much more slowly and its concentration in the blood is only exhausted after two hours. PALATINOSE is characterised by a low glycemic index (GI) and low insulin response, does not adversely affect teeth, and is also suitable for diabetics.

Endurance athletes who use ED long with isomaltulose before and after performance endure intensive physical load more easily and are able to give maximum performance for a longer time.
